It is the time of year to sign-up for 4-H Presentations!

Montgomery County 4-H 2025 County Activity Days will be Monday, May 12th and Tuesday, May 13th and will take place at the Extension Office 203 West Main Street in Troy. 4-H presentations are one of the most successful ways to help a young person learn how to do a public speech. Presentations can be a demonstration where youth show how a task is done or a product is made or an illustrated talk where youth share information using pictures, posters, models, etc.

Youth can choose from any topic they are interested in that can be easily presented in 5-12 minutes. Presentations should include a catchy title, the content, a summary of the highlights, and a list of resources used. The judges will ask questions of the presenter at the end of the presentation. 5-7 year olds do not compete but can present with Cloverbuds at the County and District Levels. Ages 8-18 can present at the County and District Level and winners of District Gold and Silver can advance to the State Level.

If your youth has never given a 4-H presentation before, here is a great place to start with the basics.

The categories for presentations include: Horse, Livestock & Dairy Production, Small & Companion Animals, Poultry, Citizenship/Community Service, Arts & Communication, Digital Reality, Family & Consumer Sciences, Hospitality Etiquette & Social Graces, Entomology, Environmental Science, Fisheries & Aquatics, Forestry & Wildlife, Agricultural Safety & Health, Health/Fitness, Foods & Nutrition, Grilling, Safety, Fruit & Vegetable Use, Egg Cookery, Peanut Foods, Dairy Foods, Careers & Entrepreneurship, Horticulture Science, Agriculture Science, Wheels & Engines, Science & Technology, and Electric. A presentation that does not fit in any of these categories listed can participate in the Open Class Category.

There are 2 additional categories; Horse Public Speaking and Public Speaking, which are formal speeches youth have memorized using no visuals or additional materials.

Youth 8-18 also have the option to perform a talent for 4-H Entertains. Acts need to be limited to 5 minutes each and can be performed by an individual or group.

To sign up for County Activity Day to give a presentation or perform a talent email anna_hamilton@ncsu.edu or call (910) 576-6011. You will reserve a 30 minute time-slot on either Monday, May 12th from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. or Tuesday, May 13th from 8:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Mark your calendars for the South Central District Activity Day on June 17th at West Iredell High School.
