We are thrilled to begin the Youth Leadership Montgomery Class of 2024-2025. Since its inception in 1998, Youth Leadership Montgomery has successfully facilitated twenty-three classes, with over 500 students participating. Youth Leadership Montgomery is a 4-H program designed for high school students to develop their communication skills, confidence, problem-solving abilities, and decision-making through hands-on activities and workshops. To participate in Youth Leadership Montgomery, students must be dedicated to personal growth, self-motivated, and desire to learn more about their community.

Each year, a small cohort is accepted into the program and completes a variety of required workshops throughout the school year. These workshops include attending two board meetings, exploring local resources, engaging in community service, and visiting the Legislature in Raleigh. Additionally, participants have assignments to complete independently, which include five hours of community service, a “Shadow a Leader” experience, and a youth leadership notebook. A graduation ceremony is held in May for those who successfully complete all program requirements.

Objectives for Participants in Youth Leadership Montgomery:

  • To understand the decision-making processes within the county.
  • To appreciate the value of community service.
  • To enhance knowledge of fundamental leadership principles.
  • To gain insights into potential career paths and the skills necessary for success in those careers.
  • To learn how to collaborate with adults to make a difference in their community
  • To become more familiar with the county, with the hope that some participants will return to Montgomery County after completing their education.

It is important that we teach our youth to become leaders within their local communities. Montgomery County has experienced a gradual population decline over the years, highlighting the need for young people to be civically engaged in the areas where they grew up. Research shows that involvement in 4-H significantly enhances students’ success and their ability to contribute to their communities. 4-H’ers in grades 8-12 are roughly twice as likely to be civically active, and 4-H’ers in grades 7-12 are nearly four times more likely to contribute positively to their communities. Of the 2022 – 2023 class of Youth Leadership Montgomery, 100% of graduates reported that they learned leadership skills beneficial for their future, understood how local decisions were made on the county level, and felt better prepared to work within teams. Youth Leadership Montgomery is dedicated to inspiring students to make positive impacts in their local communities.
