This week is National Farmers Market Week which is an annual celebration of farmers markets coordinated by the Farmers Market Coalition, a membership-based nonprofit organization that supports farmers markets nationwide through training, technical assistance, and network-building. This year, the campaign is centered around the essential role that farmers markets play in the local food system.
In the midst of a global pandemic, farmers markets have continued to operate for the communities that depend on them. When conventional food supply chains failed at the start of the pandemic, farmers markets and local food systems clearly displayed the resiliency of short supply chains and increased the interest in local foods.
The Montgomery County Farmers Market began in 2012 and currently hosts local farmers selling a wide variety of products, including meat, eggs, produce, baked goods, jams and jellies. This year, in spite of the struggles faced due to the pandemic, the market is OPEN for business.
