(Updated: Sept. 19, 2025, 4:52 a.m.)

The 2025-2026 Class of Youth Leadership Montgomery is about to be selected and we need you!

Youth Leadership Montgomery is an opportunity for high school students to develop their communication skills, confidence, problem-solving ability, and decision-making through hands-on activities and workshops. We are looking for students from across the county who are willing to commit to this experience and wish to enhance their leadership skills. Eligibility is limited to high school students residing in Montgomery County. This includes students who are homeschooled, privately schooled, or publicly schooled.

The Youth Leadership Montgomery Program involves 10 required workshops from October to May, with a graduation ceremony in May. Workshops include attending two board meetings, exploring local resources, community service, and visiting the Legislature in Raleigh. There is a schedule in the application packet that lists the dates for the required workshops. This schedule is tentative and is subject to change based on changes in the school calendar, weather events, etc. Efforts are made to work around school conflicts but participants are expected to attend all sessions. The program does permit one excused absence with make-up material. There may also be additions to the schedule as the year progresses. Participants are also required to complete five hours of community service and the Shadow a Leader experience on their own time.

The screening committee is looking for students who have shown leadership potential in their school, church, or community. Applicants should be good students and positive role models to their peers. The application form requires two recommendations from adults who support the student participating in the program. Recommendations can come from teachers, club advisors, guidance counselors, or community members.

The application form must be completed and turned in by Friday, October 10th. Applications can be sent via email to anna_hamilton@ncsu.edu or dropped off in person at the N.C. Cooperative Extension Office located at 1001 N Main Street, Troy, NC 27371.

Selected youth will have to register in 4-H Online to be a member of the program. There is a $50 fee per participant which is due at the orientation session in October. Scholarships are available based on financial needs. Please be sure you are willing to commit to all expectations of the program before signing up to participate.
