1. Choose a house style or theme. If you are making a gingerbread house from scratch, be sure to choose your house style or theme before you begin. You can google patterns or draw your own pattern.
2. Choose a sturdy base. Once you have your house assembled and decorated, you’re probably going to want to move it to a display table or shelf. Stiff cardboard works well and you can cut it to fit your house size with edges that allow for additional snow scenes, trees, walkways, etc. the right recipe.
3. Choose the right recipe. There are many different gingerbread dough recipes. Most recipes for making a structural house, although edible, are more for building rather than eating. Be sure to look for a recipe that is specifically for making a house.
4. Solve the sticky dough problem. The dough can be tricky to handle. Rolling it out on parchment paper, placing the pattern on the rolled dough and cutting with a pizza cutter helps to simplify the process. Be sure your pattern is symmetrical and even. Follow recipe instructions for dough thickness and baking times.
5. Be sure to use the right “glue’. There is nothing worse than to watch your completed house tumble. Royal icing, which is a mixture of egg whites, cream of tartar and powdered sugar, is the best mortar for keeping everything intact. Be sure to apply to edges and allow to dry before adding candies.
6. Now you’re ready to decorate. Gather a variety of hard candies, sprinkles and gumdrops. Use a large muffin pan to separate the candies and keep them organized. Now, use your imagination and have fun!A person decorates the roof of an unfinished gingerbread house.
