This year’s Regional Chicken Project and Chicken Show was obviously quite different than it has been in the past. The project normally culminates with the chicken show at the State FFA Camp on White Lake. During the show, the youth from 8 counties compete head-to-head on how much they know about poultry, avian anatomy and showmanship. There is normally fellowship between the participants, parents and younger siblings. Hotdogs and concessions are enjoyed and awards are presented after the scores of the show have been tallied. Nothing this year was normal BUT Montgomery County had four project participants that stuck with it and were rewarded for their efforts.

The showmen from Montgomery County welcomed their newly hatched chickens into their  flocks on Valentine’s Day, Friday, February 14th. From the very start, they worked hard to care for their birds by feeding, watering, cleaning coops, practicing their showmanship skills and more. When the “Shelter In Place” order was announced for North Carolina, project planners decided to make this year’s Regional Chicken Project and Show a virtual competition. Showmen prepared a two minute video introducing themselves, their bird and presented the bird to the judges like they would if they were face-to-face. During the video, they also had to answer age appropriate general knowledge questions that were sent to all participants ahead of time.

Participants submitted their videos on Friday, May 26th. The videos were watched and judged in early June, with call-back Zoom interviews being conducted “LIVE” with the judges a few days later. After the second round of “LIVE” judging was finished, the scores were compiled and the winners were announced on June 18th via a Virtual Awards Zoom Presentation for Extension Agents, Show Participants and Family Members.
